List of current issues in america today
The United States of America, or simply America. The most powerful country in the world. The most sought out country to go to for people who want to make their life. The country that most of the people look up to when someone asks them, “Where do you want to go if you got a chance to work?”. The USA has the control over mostly everything, including the world economy and military power. Many have dreams of going to America to be the Steve jobs, Bill Gates, Brad Pitt, Elon Musk and all the famous people who have helped make America great but the truth isn’t all that simple. Maybe it’s the burden of being the most powerful country in the world, looking after all the worldly matters and even the small problems in the world, America might have hesitated to look into internal matters itself. Problems have been growing and they’re starting to really affect the country. America is not always the glamorous shiny glittery Beverly hills kind of place we see in movies. Times have been changing and problems have been piling up. After a lot of research, here we have complied a list of “Top 10 Major Problems in USA”.
1 Gun Violence:
The most troubling problem that everyone is aware of in America and worldwide and probably the hardest to resolve, Gun Violence. America is called the country where you get all the freedom and that freedom includes the right to bear arms and that right is constitutionally protected. That might not sound much of a problem since big countries do allow the right to bear firearms but America has the most problematic relationship with the gun bearing law. Among the developed nations, America has by far the violent statistics. That statistics are just mind boggling, America has almost 16 times as many firearm related homicides as Germany. According to the report by Guardian’s Simon Rogers for United Nations, for every 1 million people, 29.7 deaths are a result of gun violence. That’s three times more than Switzerland which is in the second place and it has 7.7. What’s more mind boggling is, America has 4.4 percent of the world’s population, but almost half of the civilian-owned guns around the world is owned by Americans.
Mass shootings have been occurring frequently in the USA and gun violence is even bigger than the mass shootings. One of the biggest mass shooting was in December 2012, where a gunman shot 20 children, six adults, and himself. Since then, there have been at least 1,216 mass shootings in America which have killed more than 1300 people and nearly 5000 wounded. The largest mass shooting in American history was in June 12 where Omar Siddiqui open fired in a nightclub killing at least 49 people.
According to statistics, 12,942 people were killed in the United states in 2015 related to gun violence. Terrorism might dominate the headlines but it’s the gun problem that really brought America to its knees. From 2005-2015,71 Americans were killed in terrorist attacks in US, at the same time period, more than 300,00 people were killed by gun-violence.
More than mass shootings, it’s the usual shootings that take more lives. In 2015, On average, a toddler in America shoots someone about once in 7 days. Guns are used by people who fall under social problems like family violence, robbery, drug trafficking, prostitution etc.
Gun Violence have terrorized Americans more than terrorists itself. The problem is hard to eradicate as it is protected by the constitutional rights and political force supporting the gun law. More people get killed every year because of this. So, When someone says, “ America is really obsessed with guns.” , it is actually justified.
2 Terrorism :
Maybe the most common problem in the world today. America already has got a bad history with terrorism after the attack on 9/11 and all that war against terrorism after the incident that pushed the country’s foreign relations and involvement in the middle east to its maximum. Now, the growth of IS and similar terrorist organizations has been troubling Americans the most and here lies the most common problem.
The terrorism threat in America is not only from Islamist terrorist groups but America’s other problem i.e. “Media” have been so focused on spreading such information to people that Islamophobia has turned out to be very real in America which is causing another problem of conflict among people and religion. America has been so obsessed with Muslim based terrorist factions that they’ve not been able to realize that Muslim based terrorism is the least active terrorism in America. Maybe because Islamist terrorists have caused the most damage in terms of human lives and spreading fear that they have been so focused on. Non-Muslims make up the majority of terrorists in the United States. According to the FBI, from 1980 to 2005, 94% of all the terrorist attacks carried out in the United states have been by non-Muslims. There have been many terrorist threats and there will be more considering the US involvement in many countries occupied by terrorism.
9/11 was the most tragic event of terrorism in the history of America. After the attack on the twin towers of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, 2996 people were killed and more than 6000 people were wounded which brought a whole new level of fear amongst the people and the government. Terrorism has been the cause of other problems like Religion discrimination, Islamophobia, Racism, immigration problems etc so, it is one of the most problematic component that the US has to tackle. After all those years of war on terror, Terrorism is still considered one of the major issues in America today and here’s a stat to show why:

3 Climate Change :
We all know the Earth is being degraded by the Human Civilization and climate change is a very big problem to tackle. Big Countries like America, China, Russia, India and European countries have a big role to play in climate change because they’ve got the biggest industries with huge amount of Carbon Emissions that lead to global warming and climate change. Climate Change affects everyone in the world in various ways like Rising of sea level, drought, severe cold etc. So, what has America got to do with climate change? There lies the problem. Among the surveyed nations, America has the highest carbon emissions per capita. That’s not so surprising but what is concerning is that it’s the country that’s the least concerned about climate change and its potential impact. Now, that’s something to be worried about. Climate change is not seen as a distant threat in U.S. There have been improvements, American people are getting more aware about Climate Change. According to Gallup, 64% of Americans are worried a great/fair amount about Global Warming but the problem is many of the politicians preach about Global Warming not existing and that causes the opportunity for the oil companies to get access to further degrade the environment. Majority of the blame goes to the Republican party as only 40% of the Republicans say they worry a great or fair amount about global warming. Only 40%? Well, that’s an improvement than last year where it was 31%. Different factors including the economic meltdown and some well-publicized pushback against global warming science.
4 Education :
Even though situation is improving, The U.S. has still a lot to do about climate change and its awareness. After all, if they’re not fully aware, how change the rest of the world change.
Even though being one of the leading countries of the world. The education system in America is considered poor compared to other countries. 30 years ago, America was the leader in quantity and quality of high school diplomas. Today, U.S. is ranked 36th in the world. The whole system is considered to be at flaw and hasn’t been able to adapt to time. Different factors like poverty, Racial discrimination. The curriculum system has been the same throughout the years. There are less teachers and more students which has low-income students, hence, the quality of education decreases drastically. Teacher quality is one of the important factors in determining quality education and in the U.S. 14% of the new teachers resign by the end of their first year, 33% of the teachers leave within their 3 years and 50% leave by their 5th year. Lack of freedom to teach, too many students per teacher in low-income schools, traditional teaching method, undervaluation of teachers are some of the causes of this. In real world, there is a requirement of college or post-secondary education in 85% and 90% of the jobs respectively and when most don’t meet the criteria and unemployment is the result which causes further problems.
Even though spending much budget on the education bill, results have been poor. There’s also a case of racial difference. There has always been a difference in priority between white and black students. As the percentage of the white students shrinks, the U.S. will be left with a system that doesn’t serve majority of the other students properly.
The racial difference is very much and education has been degrading ever since. While countries like Finland, Sweden are adapting to new system where students and teachers are getting more freedom and whole new change in curriculum.
5 Unemployment :
Perhaps one of the most troubling problems in that world that’s unavoidable. One that has also affected a country like America. In 2014, Unemployment was considered the top problem in the United States. In 2008, the unemployment rate rose wildly from a low of 4.7% to a staggering 10.1 percent in 2009 after the economic recession and wall street collapse. It has been a problem ever since although the Obama administration has worked a lot improving the employment status. Even though employment levels have stabilized back to the stage before the recession, labor workforce participation has dropped down. Middle-age jobs requirements have also gone down so middle-aged Americans are down towards having no job. The wage growth has also not increased by much so even employed people have to suffer low paying jobs. The unemployment rate is now at a low percent of 4.6 as of November which is the lowest in 9 years. So, there have been improvements but factors like wage gap, racial discrimination are causing discrimination in people having jobs.
6 Economy :
The most problematic thing regarding America’s economy today: Workers just aren’t producing as much as they once did. Even though the unemployment problem has been tackled and people are getting jobs more than before, the productivity seems to have been decreasing every year. According to government data, Output per American worker (“worker productivity”) is at its lowest level since the 1970’s. In the 1990’s, worker productivity was up to 2.2% per year, on average. In the 2000’s, it went up to a whopping 2.6% but after the great recession, it’s been decreasing at barely 1% per year. The latest gave a negative 0.5%. American workers aren’t productive as before which is affecting the economy and even economists are finding it hard to find a solution for these problems.
Economics grow when businesses invest. The most important issue is a lack of investment spending. Companies are holding their cash even though having near record levels of cash.Businesses holding cash because of lack of clear opportunity to invest in has caused the economy to halt.
Another reason is because America is importing more than exporting. Global competitors like China and India are
7 Drug Abuse :
We’ve all seen in Hollywood movies how heroin, cocaine and crystal meth have taken over the American people and the reality is much worse than that. Addiction is probably the most neglected disease. Acccording to a Columbia University study, “ 40 million Americans age 12 and over meet the clinical criteria for addiction involving nicotine, alcohol or other drugs.” And an additional 80 million Americans are risky substance users. The government spends over $468 billion annually for health care for such addiction. What’s more concerning is that only one of 10 people who are suffering from addiction from alcholol/drugs receive treatment. The drug abuse is responsible for the cost of over $600 billion because of crime and lost work productivity related to drug abuse. Drug has affected almost all the levels of people, including the rich lavish style livers and the poor people which has caused other problems like gun violence, robber, murder, unemployment etc.
8 Racial discrimination in America :
We’ve seen how the African Americans, Hispanics and Asian getting discriminated and disgraced with racial slurs by whites in the movies. It’s the similar in the real America, though not so direct. Race is discriminated a lot there. Especially African-Americans are the ones to suffer from racial discrimination. For example: African Americans comprise only 13% of the U.S. population and only 14% of them are drug users but, when it comes to arrests related to drug-related offenses , 37% of the people are arrested. There have been clashes amongst the police and the African-American community many times. Studies have shown that police are likely to pull over and frisk blacks or Latinos than whites. In a 2009 report, 2/3 of the criminals who received life sentences were non-whites. African Americans have really been the victim since the beginning, they make up 57% of the prisoners in state prisons for drug offenses. In a survey done in 2012, 51% of Americans expressed anti-black sentiments which was a 3% increase from 2008. African Americans, Hispanics, Asians are often the victim of police brutality, mostly African Americans.
9 Islamophobia :
Phobia generally means fear of something. You might have heard of different phobias, nowadays, Islamophobia has started to become concerning. Islamophobia can be generally viewed as an exaggerated fear, hatred and hostility towards Islam and Muslims that is fueled by negative stereotypes which results in biasness, discrimination, hatred, marginalization and exclusion of Muslims from social, political and civic life. The word existed long before but has been picking up pace from 9/11 incident. It wasn’t that noticeable but it has increased frequency in the last decade. People have been influenced by media and biased content as well as fear of Islamic terrorism in the recent years. People in America have started fearing any Muslim out there thinking they are somehow related to terrorism. Hatred leads to discrimination and exclusion. Such are the problems being faced by Muslims in the U.S.
You can hear in news about how some Muslims are excluded in certain events just because looking like a typical Muslim in speaking in Arabic. Islamophobia is growing day by day so it needs to be worked on otherwise the local American Muslims will suffer more and more.
10 The Government :
According to the American people, the government is their biggest problem. According to a survey done by Gallup, the American people have voted their government as the most problematic amongst all other problems two years in a row, in 2014 and 2015. Even though the unemployment rates have gone down and economy has been going good, the government has been blamed for the inability to deal with terrorism, gun control, immigration etc. The election also showed a lot of dissatisfaction amongst the people. People don’t get mad just like that, which means the government has been lacking to improve the situations for the people to live in. Though Obama Administration has been praised a lot for its contribution in world peace and improving the economy and providing jobs after the economic meltdown in 2008, the people are still not happy with the problems like gun control, climate change, racial discrimination, health care and education and it has become a bigger issue now that Donald Trump is taking over the white house in 2017.
